There is a kind of silence that has weight. Not the empty kind, the held kind. The kind a great river makes the moment before the world wakes around it.
We were three on the boat. The fisherman, who had not yet given us his name. A photographer who had agreed not to lift his camera until the second hour. And me, holding the kind of notebook that promises more than it ever delivers.
The Nile begins not with a thunder but with an exhale. A long, low breath drawn from the underside of Lake Victoria, released into the world in slow ribbons of mist. You do not so much see it begin as you feel the country lean toward it.
I have designed many journeys for travellers who arrive looking for transformation. They imagine it will come dressed in spectacle. It almost never does. It comes, every single time, in moments exactly like this one.
