Kibale Forest holds the highest density of primates in East Africa: thirteen species including the chimpanzee, the red colobus and the L'Hoest's monkey. Tracking begins at first light, when the forest is at its most vocal. We pair Kibale with the Bigodi wetlands community walk, which is one of the most quietly impressive community-conservation models in Uganda.
Chimpanzee tracking
Treks leave from Kanyanchu twice a day. A habituated community of chimps is followed for one hour. For travellers who want longer, a chimpanzee habituation experience allows a full day with researchers and a less-habituated community.
Crater lakes and the Tooro Kingdom
Kibale sits inside the Albertine Rift's crater-lake landscape and on the edge of the Tooro Kingdom in Fort Portal. A day among the lakes, or a quiet morning at the kingdom palace, makes a thoughtful pairing for the trek.
